On July 17, 2014, InterMune, Inc. issued a press release announcing that pirfenidone has been granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The Breakthrough Therapy Designation process is intended to expedite the development and review of drugs that are intended to treat a serious or life threatening disease or condition and preliminary clinical evidence indicates that the drug may demonstrate substantial improvement over existing therapies on one or more clinically significant endpoints. Pirfendione is being developed for the treatment of adult patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
