Item 1.04 Mine Safety - Reporting of Shutdowns and Patterns of Violations.
On May 22, 2014, White Buck Coal Company, a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources, Inc., received an imminent danger order issued by the Mine Safety and Health Administration under section 107(a) of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 to the Grassy Creek No. 1 Mine (the “Mine”), located near Leivasy, West Virginia. The order alleged that sloughing ribs and mine floor hooving in a retreat mining section of the Mine were interfering with travel ways necessary for required examinations. No injuries occurred in connection with the alleged conditions, and miners were immediately withdrawn from the subject area. Alternative examination points were established, and MSHA terminated the order on May 29, 2014.
