On April 27, 2011, Community Health Systems, Inc. (the “Company”) announced operating results
for the first quarter ended March 31, 2011. A copy of the press release making this announcement
is attached as Exhibit 99.1 to this Form 8-K and is incorporated by reference into this Item 2.02.

The press release referred to in Item 2.02 above also includes the Company’s 2011 annual
earnings guidance. The 2011 guidance reaffirms the Company’s previous guidance provided on
February 24, 2011, with minor revisions to certain assumptions to reflect historical results
through March 31, 2011. A copy of the press release making this announcement is attached as
Exhibit 99.1 to this Form 8-K and is incorporated by reference into this Item 7.01.
